Introduction
Exelon is the nation’s largest utility company, serving more than 10 million customers through six distribution utilities:
Atlantic City Electric (ACE)
Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE)
Commonwealth Edison (ComEd)
Delmarva Power & Light (DPL)
PECO Energy Company (PECO)
Potomac Electric Power Company (Pepco)
Opportunity
The objective of the project was to create 1 common design for BGE, ComEd, and PECO sites to maintain them under a unified Sharepoint platform.
Approach
Major Project Milestones:
Research: Interview Stakeholders, Conduct Benchmark, Review JD Power Report
Content: Audit Sites
Information Architecture: Create Single Sitemap
Interaction Design: Create Responsive Wireframes
Visual Design: Create Pixel-perfect, Dev-ready Responsive Design
Accessibility Audit

Research: Interview Stakeholders, Benchmark, JD Power

Content: Audit Sites

Information Architecture: Create Single Sitemap
Workshop with representatives of each site to create a shared Information Architecture. The first two hierarchical levels of information are common across brands, while level 3 and 4 provide the flexibility to offer brand-specific content.

Interaction Design: Create Responsive Wireframes
We evaluated two options, a) offering content on the first hierarchical level or b) using L1 as an organizational entity only (not clickable since there's no content).

Visual Design: Create Pixel-perfect, Dev-ready Design

Accessibility Audit
An Accessibility expert inspected every single screen to ensure design met defined guidelines.

Outcome
At the end of a very aggressive timeline (9 weeks!) the team was able to deliver a unified design for 3 different utility companies: Comed, PECO, and BGE.
Seven years after final delivery of front-end code, our design is still live and relevant. The only apparent change is the application of Exelon's branding to all websites:
